Ashton man back behind wheel after serious fall thanks to service support

AN ELDERLY man from Ashton-under-Lyne is back driving, shopping independently and enjoying his usual routine after a serious fall left him with several broken ribs.

Roy Stockton’s life was turned upside down following the fall, leaving everyday tasks difficult and raising concerns about whether the 88-year-old could safely manage at home.

When he returned home, his daughter initially stayed with him because she was worried about him being on his own.

But support from Tameside Council’s Reablement service has helped Roy rebuild his confidence and independence.

Today, he needs only a little help from his daughter and is back doing many of the things he enjoyed before his fall.

Roy can drive into Ashton, do his own shopping and visit the Grafton Centre in Hyde. He rarely needs his walking stick, prepares his own meals and manages his medication.

Roy can now drive again independently.

His experience is being highlighted during Falls Prevention Week, which runs from September 21 to 25, alongside that of another Ashton resident who has also worked to regain her independence following a serious fall.

Councillor Jackie Lane, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said: “It’s great to hear that both Roy is feeling much more confident after suffering a traumatic fall. With the support of Reablement he’s been able to get back to doing the things that matters to him and prevent any future falls from happening.

“A big thank you to the team for providing incredible support to residents every day. If you or someone you know would benefit from connecting with Reablement, please get in touch with our Early Support and Advice Hub (ESAH).”

The council is using Roy’s experience to highlight the support available to people following a fall, with the aim of helping residents regain their confidence and reduce the risk of further falls.
