From brooms to UK market leader – Droylsden firm celebrates centenary

A FAMILY firm based in Droylsden that began life with just three employees supplying brooms is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Rodo, now one of the UK’s biggest suppliers of trade decorating accessories, was founded in 1926 by Joseph Brierley and remains independently owned by the same family four generations on.

Throughout 2026, the company will commemorate the anniversary with a series of activities

Over the past century, the company has evolved alongside the decorating trade itself. As emulsion paints became popular in the post-war years, Rodo expanded its range to include rollers, tools and dust sheets.

In the 1970s, the third generation of the Brierley family joined the business, launching painters’ overalls and laying the foundations for a later move into Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and workwear.

The creation of ProDec in the 1980s proved a turning point, establishing what is now Rodo’s flagship trade applicator brand and helping drive growth into the modern era.

Managing director Laura Brierley-Smith said the centenary was a moment to reflect on the people behind the success.

“Reaching 100 years is a remarkable milestone, made possible by the hard work, commitment and dedication of employees – past and present – as well as the loyal customers and suppliers who have supported us throughout our journey.

“I’m incredibly proud of all that’s been achieved, and even prouder that we continue to uphold the family culture and values our founder instilled from the very beginning.

“We are excited to celebrate this anniversary throughout the year, honouring everyone who came before us and stands with us now, who helped shape Rodo into the company it is today.”

Now based across two sites, Rodo operates more than 160,000 square feet of warehouse space and employs over 150 people. Alongside ProDec, the company’s Blackrock brand supplies an expanding range of PPE and safety equipment.

A series of celebratory events and activities are planned throughout 2026.
