Tameside recognised for progress on active travel initiatives

Tameside Council has been shortlisted for the Most Improved Council award at the upcoming Walk Ride GM Awards, reflecting significant progress in walking, wheeling and cycling across the borough.

The nomination follows a year of work to improve active travel routes, encourage sustainable journeys and strengthen partnerships that support safer, more accessible streets for residents.

Key developments this year include:

Rayner Lane scheme.
  • Rayner Lane scheme. Resurfacing, widening and improving a key off-road route used for everyday trips to schools, shops and community facilities.
    • School Streets projects. Working with Russell Scott Primary and Livingstone to create safer journeys for children and families, with three further schemes planned by June 2026.
    • Community Cycle Sundays. Free family-friendly events promoting new routes and encouraging residents to get active.
    • Inclusive cycling. Wheels for All sessions offering adapted bikes for people of all abilities.

Alongside physical improvements, the council has worked with Transport for Greater Manchester on future plans within the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2050. Active travel is also being embedded within the local plan Homes, Spaces, Places, and the council has collaborated with partners including the RNIB to support accessibility for blind and partially sighted residents.

Councillor Stephen Homer, Tameside Council Executive Member for Transport and Connectivity, said:

“We are proud to be recognised for the progress made on active travel. Every journey begins with walking, wheeling or cycling, and by investing in safer and more accessible routes we are helping residents make healthier, greener and more affordable travel choices. This nomination reflects the hard work of our teams and partners, and we are committed to continuing this progress.”

The Walk Ride GM Awards aim to champion the people and organisations reshaping Greater Manchester’s streets to prioritise people and sustainable travel. Winners will be announced later this month.
