Warning to drivers amid cable removal on Mottram Moor

MOTORISTS using one of Tameside’s busiest routes are being advised to plan ahead this weekend.

Essential electricity and sign installation works are scheduled on Mottram Moor, as part of the major £228 million A57 Link Roads scheme.

On Sunday, November 23, from 8am to 11am, National Highways say the electricity provider will remove overhead cables that currently cross Mottram Moor.

To carry out the work safely, an extra westbound lane closure will be introduced alongside the ongoing eastbound closure already in place.

Traffic will be briefly halted three times during the morning to allow engineers to lower and remove the cables. National Highways say each stop is expected to last a few minutes, and the works have been timed for off-peak hours to keep disruption to a minimum.

Two additional nights of work will also take place to complete the installation of signage. While drivers may experience minor delays, the noise impact on nearby residents is expected to remain low.

New signs now installed across the area confirm that the scheme is on track for completion by spring 2028.

The project – which aims to ease congestion between Manchester and Sheffield – includes a new dual carriageway from the end of the M67 through a Mottram underpass to the A57 east of Back Moor, and a single carriageway from Mottram Moor to Woolley Bridge.

The scheme will also deliver two new junctions – Mottram Moor Junction and Woolley Bridge Junction – along with improvements to the existing M67 junction 4. Five new structures are planned, including the Roe Cross Road overbridge, the Mottram Underpass, and the River Etherow Bridge.
