AN ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE woman has helped raise thousands of pounds for cancer charities after deciding to pose for a calendar following her on diagnosis and treatment.
Nicola Harrison was told she had breast cancer, but there has been no shying away.
Instead, she joined forces with fellow members of local support group Bosom Buddies to produce a 2026 charity calendar in aid of the Tameside Macmillan Unit and Prevent Breast Cancer.
And it has already raised more than £5,300.
Nicola said: “I found a lump, no bigger than a pea, during a self-examination in May 2024.
“Because of my family history, I have always been careful to check regularly and I am so glad I did.”
After a referral to Tameside’s breast clinic, Nicola was diagnosed in June 2024 with stage two breast cancer.
The following month, she underwent surgery to remove the tumour and lymph nodes, followed by chemotherapy at Tameside’s Macmillan Unit and radiotherapy at The Christie Hospital, Oldham.
“I had genetic testing to see if I carried any genes linked to breast, ovarian or gynaecological cancers. Thankfully, these came back negative,” she added.
To help her cope during treatment and recovery, Nicola joined Bosom Buddies, a breast cancer support group for women across Tameside and surrounding areas.
It meets monthly and provides a private online space for members to share experiences, advice and encouragement.
The idea for their fundraising calendar was inspired by the film Calendar Girls.
“We each chose a month and a theme and dressed or undressed accordingly,” said Nicola. “It was such a positive experience. The day of the photoshoot was full of laughter and friendship, and it gave us all a real boost.
“We wanted to raise funds for the local Macmillan Unit and Prevent Breast Cancer because the unit is such a calm and supportive space, staffed by amazing people who make you feel genuinely cared for.
“It offers not only treatment but holistic support such as bra and prosthesis fittings, complementary therapies, activities and lots of practical information.
“Prevent Breast Cancer also does vital work in raising awareness and providing resources to help women check themselves regularly. That message really can save lives.”
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Nicola is encouraging everyone, women and men alike, to check their breasts on the first of every month and to contact their GP practice if they have any concerns.
