Cultures come together at mosque in celebration of unity

A COLOURFUL celebration of culture and togetherness joined Tameside’s communities as part of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Ashton Health Group organised an event called ‘My Culture, Your Culture, Our World’ at Ashton Central Mosque.

It was a chance for people from all backgrounds to connect, share and celebrate what makes the borough a diverse and welcoming place.

Funded through the GM Hate Crime Community Small Grants programme and supported by Tameside Council, the gathering on Saturday, October 18, brought the spirit of unity to life, with food tasting from seven different cultures; arts and crafts activities; and information stalls promoting community support and understanding.

The mosque on Hillgate Street opened its doors to everyone, offering a warm and inclusive space that reflected the day’s message of respect and equality.

Tameside Council’s Community Safety Team were also there, sharing information on hate crime awareness and displaying artwork created by local community and faith groups for last year’s awareness campaign.

Councillor Taf Sharif, Executive Member for Public Health, Community Cohesion and Equalities, praised those involved for creating such a positive event.

She said: “I want to thank Tameside Health Group and Ashton Central Mosque for their leadership, and every culture that took part in this wonderful event, showcasing the amazing work that makes Tameside such a vibrant and united community.

“It was truly inspiring to see so many community groups come together to show Tameside Standing Together, especially in light of recent events. Gatherings like this remind us of the strength we find in our diversity. An opportunity to connect, to learn from one another, and to celebrate the shared values that bind us together.”
