A CONTEMPORARY jazz legend will be putting on a special one-off performance to kickstart the autumn season at a Mossley arts venue.
Acclaimed clarinettist Arun Ghosh is heading to The Vale this September to serve up a curated playlist from across his five albums.
The musician and composer from Greater Manchester will be alongside a group of long-time musical comrades, the identity of whom remains under wraps.
A familiar face on the UK jazz scene since the early 2010s, Arun’s debut appearance at The Vale – in Vale Mill on Micklehurst Road – will come shortly after he returns from a world tour.
One of a quartet of musicians playing with sitar player Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of maestro Ravi and half-sister to 10-time Grammy winner Norah Jones, the tour took in cities including Toronto, Seattle, New York and Brighton.
Other recent projects of the Calcutta-born twice-named jazz instrumentalist of the year include an electro-acoustic reimagining of St Francis of Assisi’s prayer The Canticle of the Sun and sound design for a Royal Court Theatre production.
On Saturday, September 13 from 7.30pm, he will be playing tracks from across his five albums on Camoci records, which span 14 years of recordings. They are Northern Namaste (2008), Primal Odyssey (2011), A South Asian Suite (2013), But Where Are You Really From? (2017) and double album Secluded in Light (2022).
Support will come from local singer-songwriter Coruja Jones, who has toured with Joe Jackson. His latest recording Undo delves into the healing process in different forms and was produced by Sam Vicary from The Cinematic Orchestra.
Johnny Clifford, programming manager at The Vale, said: “Arun is a charismatic and communicative performer. This one-off show will be startling, spontaneous and moving and this is a gig not to be missed!”
