Stalybridge ready to be gripped by carnival fever

AFTER the fun of the Spring Show and The Den, the entertainment does not stop there in Stalybridge.

The wait is almost over for this year’s Carnival, which promises to be another marvellous occasion that will take over the town on Sunday, June 22.

There’s a family fun day in Cheetham Park starting at 11am, which will include a large fun fair, artisan and community stalls, hot food and live entertainment.

Then, local community groups, schools, dance groups and businesses will be involved in the anticipated parade – which will start on Bayley Street at 1pm before making its way through the town centre.

Like every year, months of hard work and planning has gone into organising the popular summer event by Stalybridge Festival Committee and Dukinfield & Stalybridge Rotary Club, with support this year from Huddersfield Canal Society.

Organising Secretary Ian Cochrane said: “It is important to recognise that the Carnival is organised purely by a group of local volunteers and funded by the hard work and fundraising of these volunteers, who give their time freely to plan and organise the event.

“Without their hard work and detailed planning, we would not have a Carnival in Stalybridge.”

The support of people of all ages from the local community and beyond also makes the event the success that it is.

“On behalf of the Festival Committee, I would like to thank the thousands of people from Stalybridge and beyond who come along and support our Carnival which this year is celebrating its 49th anniversary,” Ian added.

“It is clearly an integral part of the culture and heritage of our town and is fantastic to see so many groups, schools, nurseries and local businesses taking part in the parade and having such large crowds lining the route and joining in the celebrations and activities in Cheetham Park.”

Stalybridge Festival Committee Chairman, Brendan Lomas, advises that to recognise the significant and valued contribution made by their late Hon President, Joyce Hobson, who sadly passed away in April, the Festival Committee will be presenting the Joyce Hobson Trophy to the Carnival Queen with the Best Personality.

The award will be judged by Chloe Hobson – former Stalybridge Carnival Queen and grand daughter of Joyce.

Many of the Carnival Organisations across the region are expected to be represented by their own Carnival Queens to pay tribute to Joyce who was well respected across the Carnival community.
