CHILDREN have become champions at keeping their community in Ashton-under-Lyne clean and tidy.
Youngsters from Holy Trinity Primary School helped councillors and volunteers carry out a clean-up of their local area.
It came after the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, and her Consort Declan Fitzpatrick gave Tameside’s latest Litter Hub the official stamp of approval.
There are now 20 located across the borough, where people and groups can borrow equipment for free – including gloves, litter pickers and hi-vis jackets – to help pledge their time to clean up their area’s streets.
After a litter pick, people will be told where to leave bags of litter collected – so they can be disposed of responsibly by the council – and return the equipment until next time.
The newest Litter Hub facility is at Holy Trinity Church, in the St Peter’s ward, at the request of Holy Trinity Community Centre and Jigsaw Homes.
The local community came out in force to support the opening, before getting their hands dirty to clean up the church grounds, adjoining streets and the nearby millennium green.
Tameside Council’s Executive Member for climate emergency and environmental services is pleased that the Litter Hubs network across the borough has increased from just six to 20 in four years.
“Hubs exist to help residents and businesses come together to show pride in their areas,” said Councillor Denise Ward.
“The new one at Holy Trinity is a perfect demonstration of the desire people have to take responsibility for their neighbourhoods and have them looking their best.
“Litter hubs allow residents to take the lead in making their districts look loved, clean, tidy and cared for. It’s that simple, and it’s something we really appreciate as a council.”
More information about the Litter Hubs can be found on the council’s website at www.tameside.gov.uk/litterhubs.
Not a dickie bird in the article about councillor Khan, who’s done more to tackle the rubbish problem in that area in the past four months than was done in the previous four years or more. I suspect he’s had some input into this venture.
Something me and the village idiot have noticed is that bags of dumped household refuse are left on the streets for weeks or months by Tameside council, get split and some of their contents gets blown all over the show. How that helps the litter situation is beyond us.
