Public meeting to begin plans for Hyde’s 150th anniversary

PLANS are being formulated to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Hyde as an official township.

And the local community is being invited to a public meeting to help make it happen.

It takes place at St George’s Church, on Church Street, on Wednesday, September 25.

Doors will open at 6.30pm ahead of the meeting starting at 7pm, closing at around 8pm.

All businesses, community groups, faith groups, charities and residents with any connection to Hyde who are keen to make a difference and contribute time and energy are welcome to attend.

The meeting will discuss the viability of a programme of events and gauge interest in support to mark the occasion.

The short-term aim is to establish a steering group of people with the necessary drive and skills to deliver events for the entire diverse Hyde community.

Hyde was officially incorporated as a borough town on February 18, 1881, and led to the construction of the town hall – which started in 1883 and was completed two years later.

The town will officially become 150 years old in 2031.

Back in 1931, there were 10 days of activities for the community – including a large pageant parade in the town centre – to mark the 50th anniversary in style.
