Iconic Mossley pub faces transformation following closure

AN old pub in Mossley is set to be turned into flats following its closure last year.

The Best O’Brass on Manchester Road served its last pint back in February 2023. Although there were hopes locally it could be revived as a drinking establishment – its future looks as though its going in another direction.

TMJ Contractors Ltd have tabled a proposal to turn the building into three flats.

The Manchester Road site already has a flat on the first floor, but this application would see the bar area on the ground floor and the cellar become residential spaces.

Two flats would contain two bedrooms as well as separate kitchen and living areas and the underground space having just one bedroom studio flat layout.

The pub in the heart of Bottom Mossley was put out for auction in March 2023 and was later sold on. Before that, the former owner put out an advert for a new landlord in November 2022 with an annual rent of £10,000.

The advert read: “The Best O’Brass is a friendly ‘locals’ community drinks only focused pub, which is well supported.

“Cask Ale, Quiz Nights, Open the Box & Bonus ball should also be used to drive footfall. Trade will come from locals looking for a friendly place to meet and have fun.”

The pub has been de-licensed, making The Commercial and Britannia Inn the last two traditional pubs standing on the main high street in Bottom Mossley.

Tameside Council’s planning team will need to approve the application before any work can start.

  1. Sad but a sign of the times.

At least flats would be a better proposition than the rabbit hutches commonly known as HMOs which seem to be springing up all over.

      1. The types of folks who will live in these paper walled hastily built so called flats won’t need to park anything because they’re more the bus taking sort I’d have thought.
