A MAIN road in Hattersley will see improved walking and cycling routes thanks to new funding.
Tameside Council says the A560 currently has “poor connectivity and road safety issues” with a lack of pedestrian crossings, walkways and junctions.
The proposed improvements “aim to address these issues” and “enhance the area’s infrastructure”, the authority added.

These include reducing speed limits, improving road surfaces, junctions, bus stops, and widening roads to support pedestrians and cyclists.
The council has received £810,000 from Transport for Greater Manchester, as part of the Streets for All initiative.
Drawing down over £800,000 from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) has also been approved by the council’s Executive Cabinet. This will enable work on a business plan to progress, which will also include a public consultation.
A key structure in the area is the Hattersley viaduct, which is set to receive essential maintenance – including drainage and waterproofing work – as part of the project.
Councillor Laura Boyle, Executive Member for Housing, Homelessness, Planning, Transport and Connectivity, said: “Investment in the A560 area is crucial to making Hattersley safer and more accessible.
“The CRSTS funding will help reconnect communities and manage travel impacts around future developments.
“It is however really important that we get the views of the local community, residents and stakeholders so all the proposals being developed will go out for consultation before any decisions are made.”
The council says more information will be released in the coming weeks.
