Volunteers welcome upgrade to Ashton park

A POPULAR park in Ashton-under-Lyne has undergone an upgrade just in time for the summer holidays.

Tameside Council has completed a series of improvements in King George the Fifth Playing Fields – much to the delight of the group of volunteers who look after them.

The Keep Fit Path around the park – which was installed back in 2013 – has been widened and resurfaced in recent weeks. The loop is half-a-mile long and has outdoor gym equipment along its route.

The Friends of King George the Fifth Playing Fields says it is seeking funding for additional gym equipment and litter bins for the Keep Fit Path.

It adds that the council is in the process of upgrading the children’s park, already removing the old fort sandpit and installing some new play equipment with rubber safety matting around it.

The friends’ group is still looking for more volunteers to work in the Georgie Porgies cafe – currently open on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm – so that it can open on Sundays and bank holidays.

Anyone interested in finding out more information can email alan.fish.161te@gmail.com or call 07931 765 120.

The outdoor stage in the park is holding its first show this year – Kevin Tickles Dogs – for young people on Monday, August 12, at both 11am and 2.30pm.
