POPPIES put on trees in Stalybridge town centre have been vandalised less than two days after they were placed there.
Volunteers attached them on Saturday, October 28, in a sign of the area being ready to remember its fallen on both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
However, on the morning of Monday, October 30, several on Melbourne Street were found torn and split after an apparent attack.
This desecration is sure to dismay many in the town who campaigned to show their mark of respect – and took on the work of placing poppies around Stalybridge themselves.
Poppies were attached at various locations around Melbourne Street, Armentieres Square and the town’s war memorial.
Now a number have been left in tatters by what appears to be senseless vandalism.
Stalybridge’s war memorial, on Trinity Street, will see services remembering people who gave their life serving their country in various conflicts, including both World Wars.
And after this year’s poppies were placed by members of the Royal British Legion, alongside councillors and volunteers, the organisation said: “We would like to thank them and all who came to say thank you.”
Now, however, their work has been left in pieces after the vandalism.
No respect.
