Stalybridge barber plan a cut above

A NEW barber shop is to be created in Stalybridge after Tameside Council granted permission for it to be built.

Applicant Darren Varden cleared the site on Stocks Lane and after neighbours’ complaints, a mesh fence was put up around it.

Now it will see a one-storey business premises built on it after the authority said yes to the application.

The barber, which will be operated by a ‘local person,’ will, according to documents, ‘serve the local community.’

The site on Stocks Lane

They add: “There is no barbers in the locality, the nearest is in the centre of Stalybridge.

“Due to the proposal being modest small scale, the vitality and viability of the town centre shops will not be affected.

“The impact of the proposed shop on the amenity neighbouring dwellings has been carefully considered during the design process.

“The proposed development makes use of derelict land and provides a neighbourhood facility.

“The building has been designed to protect the privacy of existing residents and improve their visual amenity.

“The proposal makes good use of the land available and sits comfortably within the site and street scene.

“The shop provides a permanent solution to a vacant site which has been a source of anti-social behaviour and fly tipping for years.

“It provides a new service to the local community and visual vitality to the street.”

Customers will park on the street as there is no room for a car park but the application states: “Due to its scale, little traffic will be generated.”

Objections were received, with reasons including the site is too small to accommodate a commercial use, which would be out-of-keeping with the local character.

Others were traffic generated would cause road safety hazards and increase competition for on-street parking in Stocks Lane, similar services as proposed are available in the nearby town centre and if the business were to fail the building would stand vacant and pressure would be brought to bear for its change of use.

However, Tameside Council gave the go ahead in an executive decision by director of place Julian Jackson.
