Millbrook Primary gets high Marks

A STALYBRIDGE primary school is celebrating after achieving not one, but two, prizes for its pupils’ achievement.

Millbrook Primary, on Bank Road, has gained a Primary Science Quality Mark after showing its commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning.

And it is also the proud holder of a School Games Platinum Mark Award for the work it has done in PE.

In the classroom, Millbrook Primary has joined a select band of schools to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM).

It is a one-year school improvement programme for primary science, which provides professional development for new and experienced subject leaders each year.

That results in an improvement in the way in which science is planned and taught across the whole school.

The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the Primary Science Teaching Trust.

Associate Professor Jane Turner, PSQM National Director said: “There was never a more important time for primary children to have a high-quality science education.

“The coronavirus pandemic and climate change crisis have made everyone aware of the importance of science in our world.

“Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure scientific understanding and skills.

“Science subject leaders, their colleagues, head teachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.”

Outside, mostly, of the classroom, Millbrook has also showed its skill by gaining its school Gmaes Mark, part of a Government-led award scheme that recognises schools’ engagement, as well as celebrates keeping young people active.

And a spokesman for Millbrook Primary said: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

“Our physical activity and school sport achievements this year include children taking an active role in developing our PE curriculum Success at local competitions including SEN panathalon.

“Our young leaders and sports ambassadors have planned and facilitated active play times and intra-school events, including sports day.

“The school has enable children to experience sports they may not usually have access to including archery, curling, skateboarding, bouldering and freestyle gymnastics.

“We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. “We believe in the power of physical activity and school sport as a school and give opportunities to those young people that need it most either as a participant, leader, official or volunteer.

“Both awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and children in both PE and Science.

“We are really proud of the wide education we provide at Millbrook and grateful to all our staff but especially in this case, our PE and Science leads, Miss Johnson and Mrs May.”
