STALYBRIDGE is the centre of creative excellence after schools and children showed their skills in a scarecrow display.
Eight schools in the town and Dukinfield contributed their ideas to the exhibition that was unveiled at the community hub on Grosvenor Street,
Organised by the Stalybridge branch of the Women’s Institute, the exhibition saw schools, including St Paul’s, Wild Bank and Oakdale primary, recycle materials into figures to tie in with the Great Big Green Week.

After giving planters around the area, which have been well received by pupils, this is the next instalment of the WI working with the next generation.
And Dorothy Holt, of Stalybridge WI, said: “The idea came as after we’d given the planters out, the children and schools were very enthusiastic.
“It had been brewing for a while and we thought, ‘We’ll get them to do a fun thing.’ What better than a recycled scarecrow?
“We said, ‘This year, we’ll do something different.’ We wanted to celebrate schools and the Great Big Green Week. That’s the heart of what the WI is all about, its environmental concerns.
“We didn’t actually have a place to put them but I approached manager at the hub and said, ‘If we can come and put our scarecrows in, it’ll be a double benefit for you.’”
Members of the WI added their own display, one of ladies sitting at a table.
And it will greet any potential new members when they arrive at the group’s next meeting on October 3.
