Community garden making a difference

HATTERSLEY Community Big Garden project has certainly made a difference for the area – and soon they might have the award to prove it.

The project is one of four shortlisted in BBC Radio Manchester’s ‘Make a Difference’ awards in the environmental category.

BBC visit Hattersley

BBC reporter Lydia Flavell visited the garden to interview Dez Claire and some of his team of volunteers and film a video for the BBC website.

The community project was launched in 2019 to transform the rundown site on Union Close into a safe space for people to enjoy gardening, woodwork and socialising.

There is also an orchard and poultry, and the volunteers harvest rainwater so they don’t need to use a tap, and there are no chemicals on site.

Dez said: “We are honoured to be shortlisted for this award. It is recognition for four years of hard work by our team of volunteers.

“My vision for what this place could be is becoming a reality. We have taken a rundown site and transformed it into a safe sustainable sanctuary in the heart of our community.”

The winners will be announced on Friday, September 23. Watch BBC Radio Manchester’s video and see all the nominees here: https://tinyurl.com/mr372the
