Pat’s winning spree continues with Lady Captain’s triumph

PAT Southall triumphed in Lady Captain’s, a 27-hole major at Denton, and had extra reason to cheer.

The victory came on daughter Michelle’s 49th birthday and she declared it was a double celebration.

Pat, who was playing off 29, shot a nett 70 followed by 35 in the additional nine holes for a total of 105.

Lady captain’s prizegiving

It gave Pat, 75, victory by one shot from runner-up Angela Ellam who was her playing partner on the day while third place went to Linda Leung.

The 18-hole competition was won by Sharon Murray with Lana Mulhearn runner-up.

Pat, a former member at Brookdale, is a multiple major winner at Denton, and her previous board competition victory came last year in the Whittaker Brown, the women’s matchplay title, an event she has won several times as has also been the case with Lady Captain’s.

“I didn’t think I had any more majors in me at my age. I had been playing quite well in the last few weeks and it was lovely to win Lady Captain’s,” she said.

Lady captain’s prize for the men, an 18-hole Stableford, was won by Graham Rose with 43 points.

Second was Steven Coupe (42) while third place went to Derek Stanley (41).

Lady captain’s prize to seniors, also an 18-hole Stableford, went to Frank Goodwin whose hole in one at the 13th helped his amass 42 points. Runner-up was Chris Unsworth (41) on the card Lee Thompson.

Frank, 78, hole from the tee at the 140-yard hole using a seven iron.

“I saw the ball hit the green but, when there was no sign of it, thought it may have gone through the back and out of bounds,” he explained.

“One of my playing partners said check the hole where I found my ball, a nice surprise.”

Frank spoke about the importance of the ace, explaining: “I scored five points on that hole so that won the competition for me as the victory was by only one point,” he continued.

Frank, who lives in Denton, added: “I was talking to the professional (Jimmy Lister) afterward and he told me had had never had a hole-in-one.

“You need a lot of luck when you hit the ball that far.”

Frank took up golf 15 years ago when he retired as a fire protection engineer.

He said: “My neighbour at the time, the late Charles Robinson, was captain of the golf club.

“I mentioned about joining and the next thing he had brought a form for me to fill in.”

Lady captain’s prize to the juniors was won by Piotr Paszcza from runner-up Joe Jones.
