Longest Day Challenge fundraiser for cancer charity

FOUR Stamford golfers took part in the Longest Day Challenge for charity.

Josh Woodcock, Ashley Atkinson, George Hughes and Chris Glover played four rounds on one day which turned out to be the hottest of the year.

And their efforts also raised £665 for Macmillan Cancer Support with the disease having touched all four.

The end of the challenge

George, who lives in Bottom Mossley, explained the four friends saw the Longest Day Challenge advertised and decided to give it a go.

Their team was called Stamford Scratchers, tongue in cheek as they are far from being scratch golfers, something underlined by the fact that between them they lost more than 30 balls on the day.

They teed off in tranquil conditions just after dawn at 5am, began the second round at 9am, had a 30-minute lunch break before resuming at 1.30pm and starting their last round at 5pm and completed it four-and-a-half hours later.

The highlight of the day was Chris, a 20-handicapper from Hattersley, chipping in at the 13th for an eagle three on the par five.

George added it was exhausting – he did 40,000 steps – but fun as proved by the delirious laughter for a 15-minute spell over something as innocuous as a packet of biscuits.

The four – Josh and Ashley both live at Copley – are planning to make it an annual event.

“We wanted to test the water and set our target low at £400 and raised £625. Next year we will do some more serious fundraising,” said George.
