Local futsal teams crowned champions

THE Ashton-based Sala Futsal Club has enjoyed success in the Pokemon FA Youth Futsal Cup with four teams crowned regional champions.

The Under-10 and U16 boys and U12 and U14 girls were all victorious in the Manchester County Football Association’s regional round.

And the teams will now represent the Manchester County FA in the northern finals which will be held at Northumbria University in June after their triumphs at the former Manchester City training complex at Platt Lane, Moss Side.

Sala fielded two teams in the boys’ U10 and the winning team, comprising mainly Mossley-based players, was a mixture of U9 and U10 players.

There were four teams in the U12 girls’ competition with most of the winning team’s players Tameside based.

The U14 girls were emphatic winners and the U16 boys, largely comprising pupils from Mossley Hollins High School, were the outstanding Sala team in the event.

“We have been competing in the event for a number of years and having four winners is the best we have ever done,” explained club founder Neil Lucas.

The Sala club, started in 2009, has roots in Mossley as Neil is from the town. It trains at Great Academy Ashton.

Until lockdown, the club also hired the facilities at Mossley Hollins High School. Their home ground is the indoor hall at Wright Robinson Sports College, Gorton.
