Marathon effort by fundraisers

A DENTON-BASED hairdresser teamed up with a university lecturer to complete the London Marathon – without venturing near the capital.

For Stef Drakapoulos pounded the pavements of Tameside to do the 26.2 mile course virtually.

Normally known for his physical efforts on a bike, the stylist from Hair by Fraser on Manchester Road teamed up with Dr Jorge Nunez for the run.

And they completed it in an impressive 4h 36min 55secs while raising funds for Manchester’s Deaf Centre and Fundação Angelica Goulart, a foundation for under-privileged children in Dr Nunez’s native South America.

Dr Nunez, who hails from Argentina, may be a law lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University but is also a qualified sign language translator, hence the MDC charity.

And Stef was running with a seasoned marathon man as he explained: “He has previously run the Manchester, Paris, Rome and London marathons.

“I ran with him as I’d been coaching him for his virtual London marathon which we completed by running around Tameside and then finishing at the Deaf Institute on Manchester’s Oxford Road.”

Dr Nunez did not stop there as the run was part of his bid to run 1.075km over the course of 2021, with proceeds being split between the charities.

A feat even more impressive given that in January, he was hospitalised after contracting Covid-19.
