Alex serves up shield victory

ALEX Graver became the second winner of Priory Tennis Club’s Geoff Kenworthy Shield, an open competition played in memory of the former member who died in 2014.

In a hard-fought final, Alex, from Brabyns Tennis Club, defeated Josh Byrom in a deciding tie-break.

Winner Alex Graver

Josh, from Bowdon Tennis Club, took the first set 6-2 before Alex levelled by winning the second set 6-1 to force a tie break which he won 7-4.

Sixteen players were seeded into four groups with the top two from each group progressing to the quarter finals.

The winners then progressed to the semi-finals and these proved to be very closely contested matches.

Runner-up Josh Byrom

Unfortunately, Priory’s Nick Holmes, the defending champion, had to concede through injury after losing the first set tie break to Alex Graver.

The other semi between talented youngsters Chris Czermak (Priory) and Josh Byrom was won by Josh 6-2, 6-2.

Geoff’s wife Cynthia presented the finalists with their shields.
