Denton boy conquers Snowdon for homelessness charity

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy from Denton has climbed the highest mountain in Wales to raise money for a local charity supporting people affected by homelessness.

Freddie and his family reached the summit of Snowdon, completing a sponsored hike in aid of Emmaus Mossley.

The youngster took on the challenge on Saturday, September 19, after wanting to do something to help people experiencing homelessness, with his fundraising total now exceeding £1,100.

And having tackled the mountain, Freddie is already looking ahead to his next adventure.

He said: “I really enjoyed doing Snowdon, especially all the climbing. It was easy and I want to do another big mountain next year. It makes me sad to see homeless people and I wanted to help in any way I could.”

Before setting off on the hike, Freddie visited Emmaus Mossley to learn more about the work of the local charity, which supports people to overcome homelessness and rebuild their lives.

Its residential community provides a home and tailored support for up to 26 people at a time, helping residents develop their confidence, self-esteem, skills and work experience as they work towards their goals.

Despite difficult weather conditions on the day, Freddie and his family completed the walk, with his mum Kirsty praising his determination throughout the challenge.

She said: “The weather was awful but we did it and it was all for a great cause. Freddie was amazing – he was in front helping everyone along and he can’t wait to do the next one.”

The money raised will contribute towards Emmaus Mossley’s plans to improve its community building and facilities, helping the charity continue its work supporting people affected by homelessness.

Ant Hopkinson, Chief Executive of Emmaus Mossley, said: “We’re all enormously grateful to Freddie and his family, not only for the money they’ve raised, but for the kindness and determination behind it.

“If Freddie’s story has inspired you to take on a challenge of your own, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a walk, run, cycle, bake sale or something completely different, there are lots of ways you can fundraise for Emmaus Mossley and help us continue supporting local people to rebuild their lives after homelessness.”

Freddie’s fundraiser is still available to support online on his JustGiving page.
