Eleven locations across Tameside could be in line for road safety improvements after plans to develop a new wave of schemes were approved.
Tameside Council’s Executive Cabinet has agreed the next stage of its Highway Safety Programme, which uses collision and highway data to identify areas where changes could improve safety.
The decision does not mean work at the 11 locations has been given the final go-ahead. Instead, studies and designs can now be developed to establish what improvements may be possible.
The locations are:
- Greenside Lane, between Cambridge Road and Chappell Road, Droylsden
- Ashton Road/Turner Street/Egerton Street junction, Denton
- Market Street, between Dunkirk Street and Moorside Street, Droylsden
- Ashton Road/Worthington Way junction, Denton
- Mottram Road, Hyde
- Two Trees Lane, Denton
- Underwood Road, Hyde
- Shepley Road, Audenshaw
- Denton Road, Audenshaw
- Talbot Road, Hyde
- Huddersfield Road, between Grove Road and Staley Road, Stalybridge
Any schemes eventually brought forward would still be subject to public consultation, detailed design work and the availability of funding.
The latest proposals follow work already carried out through the programme at Market Street in Droylsden and Ashton Road in Denton.
Improvements at Beaufort Road in Ashton-under-Lyne are substantially complete, while work is continuing on schemes at Darnton Road in Ashton-under-Lyne and part of Ridge Hill Lane in Stalybridge.
Measures delivered through the programme include upgraded pedestrian crossings, dropped kerbs and tactile paving, new road markings and signs, traffic-calming measures, resurfacing and junction improvements.
Cllr Stephen Homer, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Towns, Transport and Connectivity, said: “We’re making good progress on our Highway Safety Programme, with several schemes already completed and more improvements now moving into the next stage of development.
“In this next phase we will develop proposals for 11 further locations across Tameside. This will create a pipeline of potential highway safety improvements, ensuring we are well placed to deliver schemes where they are most needed as funding becomes available.
“These improvements are designed to make our roads safer, improve accessibility and create a better environment for everyone travelling around the borough, whether that’s by car, bike or walking and wheeling.”
