ASHTON United defender Sam Baird has stepped away from football temporarily after suffering a setback in his recovery ahead of the new season.
The popular centre-back has made the decision, following discussions with the club, to focus fully on his long-term recovery.
Sam has been sidelined for an extended period, and while the setback is a blow for both the player and the club ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, the Robins have stressed that his health and wellbeing remain the priority.
Manager Steve Cunningham said: “As a management team and as a club, we are saddened to share this news, but we know our supporters will join us in wishing Sam a full and speedy recovery. We all hope to see him back wearing the colours of Ashton United when the time is right.
“We would also like to send our very best wishes to Sam and his family during this period. We look forward to welcoming the Baird family back to Hurst Cross and hope to see them at matches throughout the season.”
The club will retain Baird’s registration while he takes time away from playing, with Ashton continuing to support his recovery.
Since arriving at Hurst Cross seven years ago, Baird has become a firm favourite among supporters, earning praise for his professionalism and commitment both on and off the pitch.
His time with the Robins has included some memorable moments, including a dramatic last-minute winner against Macclesfield during the 2024/25 campaign.
Sam has made 158 appearances for the Robins to date, scoring 12 goals.
Ashton will begin the new Northern Premier League Premier Division season at home to Lancaster City on Saturday, August 8.
