Minecraft, robots and 3D printing as free tech festival comes to Tameside

RESIDENTS of all ages are being invited to explore the world of technology this summer as a week-long digital festival returns to Tameside.

TechKnow Festival will take place from July 13 to 18, with a programme of free activities across the borough’s libraries designed to help people improve their digital skills and confidence.

The festival will culminate in a free community showcase on Saturday, July 18, outside Ashton Library, where visitors can try out the latest technology, take part in interactive workshops and get advice from local organisations.

Among the attractions will be coding sessions with Edison robots, a robot wrestling arena, Minecraft Quest challenges, animation workshops, augmented reality colouring, 3D design and printing demonstrations, and stalls from organisations including PC Refurb, Tameside Community Computers, Flowhesion and Tameside Libraries.

Families will also be able to book places on ComputerXplorers sessions, giving children the opportunity to develop coding, creativity and problem-solving skills through technology.

Elsewhere during the week, libraries will host Learn My Way and iDEA sessions to help residents build confidence online, while a dedicated Smartphone SOS event on Thursday, July 16, will offer one-to-one support for anyone struggling with their phone or tablet.

People are encouraged to bring their own device along to receive help with everything from downloading apps and staying safe online to learning the basics. Friends and family members who may benefit from extra support are also welcome.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “Digital skills are now essential for everyday life, this could be anything from keeping in touch with loved ones to accessing vital services. TechKnow Festival is about making sure everyone feels confident and included.

“The Saturday event will be a fantastic day out for all ages, with plenty of family-friendly activities including Minecraft challenges and hands-on coding with robots. Our Smartphone SOS session is also a great opportunity to support anyone who may need a helping hand with their device.”

The festival aims to make technology more accessible while encouraging residents to develop the digital skills increasingly needed in everyday life, whether for work, education or staying connected.
