Tameside children invited to get into rhythm of reading this summer

CHILDREN across Tameside are being encouraged to pick up a book and join a summer of stories, music and activities.

That’s because the borough’s libraries are gearing up to launch this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The 2026 challenge, Read to the Beat!, gets under way with Super Sign-Up Saturday on July 4, inviting families to take part in the annual reading adventure organised by The Reading Agency.

Libraries will be celebrating the music-themed challenge with creative activities, themed events and a collection of books designed to inspire young readers throughout the summer holidays.

The challenge is open to children aged four to 11, who are encouraged to read six library books – including free eBooks and eAudiobooks – while collecting stickers and rewards along the way.

Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate to celebrate their achievement, which they can take back to school in September. Children who finish before September 19 will also be entered into a prize draw to win a disco package, including a karaoke machine, microphone, disco ball and lights.

Younger children can also take part through the Mini Challenge, giving preschool children the chance to collect stickers for reading books and earn a gold medal sticker when they complete their challenge.

Throughout the summer, libraries will host a range of free activities including treasure hunts, making bee drums, storytelling sessions, Lego Robotics, a silent disco and the chance for children to become a hip hop DJ.

Tameside’s libraries will be transformed into magical spaces full of music, creativity and stories.

Councillor Leanne Feeley, Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, said: “Super Sign-Up Saturday is all about igniting children’s excitement for reading right from the start of the summer holidays.

“We’re so excited to welcome families to our libraries as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge!

“The 2026 theme, Read to the Beat, is all about celebrating the joy of music and the power it has to move, inspire, and connect us – all through the magic of reading.”

Now in its 27th year, the Summer Reading Challenge aims to keep children reading during the school holidays, helping to avoid the drop in reading levels that can happen over the summer break.

Last year, more than 11 million books were borrowed through libraries across the UK as part of the challenge, including audio and eBooks.

Families can sign children up at their local Tameside library and begin the challenge this summer. More information and a full list of activities can be found at www.tameside.gov.uk/libraries/src
