Special celebration for Tameside’s Shared Lives community

PEOPLE supported by Shared Lives, their carers and the team behind the service came to Stamford Park for a special celebration recognising the difference the scheme makes across Tameside.

The annual Party in the Park brought the Shared Lives community together recently for an afternoon of food, music and dancing, as well as plenty of laughter during the popular rounders match.

The event also featured a pony patch, giving attendees the chance to get involved and enjoy time together in the sunshine.

Hosted by Tameside Council’s Long-term Support Service, it’s an annual opportunity to celebrate Shared Lives and the people who help make the scheme such a success.

The celebration formed part of Shared Lives Week, held from June 15 to 21 June, which shines a light on the carers, supported adults and teams involved in the service across the borough.

Shared Lives helps adults with a range of needs live more independently by matching them with carers who share their interests, hobbies and passions. Support can include living with a carer, visiting their home for day support, or receiving respite care as an alternative to supported living or residential care.

Councillor Jackie Lane, Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Inclusivity, said: “Shared Lives Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who make the scheme so special throughout the year.

“The Party in the Park is all about coming together, having fun, and recognising the positive impact Shared Lives has on individuals, families, and our community as a whole. It’s fabulous to see those involved celebrated for their commitment and dedication to helping people live independently in Tameside.”

Shared Lives carers are recruited, trained, matched and supported by Tameside Council. The scheme welcomes people from a variety of backgrounds and does not require formal qualifications.

Carers must be over 18, live in Tameside and have the patience, flexibility and commitment needed to support someone in their everyday life.

The council is currently encouraging more people to consider becoming Shared Lives carers.
