Stalybridge multi-storey car park gets go ahead 

STALYBRIDGE is to get a new multi-storey car park after planning permission was granted. 

The current surface site, which is currently accessed from Waterloo Road, will be converted into a three-floor facility, boosting the number of spaces from 69 to 171.

It is being expanded to mitigate the loss of other car parks around the centre as the Stalybridge West plan takes shape. 

And member of Tameside Council’s Speaker’s Panel (Planning) committee, Cllr Jake Frater, told its meeting on Wednesday, June 22: “This is what is needed.” 

Despite being taken on by a management firm, concerns it would not fall under the authority’s current policy, which provides two hours for free, were eased. 

For officers told councillors it will be put forward on their terms. 

The new car park would have accessible spaces, as well as those for electric vehicle charging.

Ten area is currently home to a surface car park.

And it I hoped having it will help boost visitor numbers and support local shops, cafes, and businesses. 

News of the plan being approved with a vote of eight to one, with Stalybridge South Cllr Doreen Dickinson abstaining, was met with delight by Tameside Council. 

Its deputy leader, Cllr Andrew McLaren, said s works is set to begin in early 2027: “This is an important step forward for Stalybridge. 

“The new multi-storey car park will support our wider plans to improve the town, making it easier for people to visit and spend time here while helping local businesses to grow.”
