Support helps Manchester City fan from Droylsden towards his goal

A LONG-TIME Manchester City supporter from Droylsden is looking ahead to the final game of the season – after rebuilding his confidence and independence with help from a local support service.

Roger Buttress had been struggling with his mobility and admits he didn’t feel confident doing simple things like using the stairs on his own.

That changed after he began working with Tameside Council’s Reablement team, who supported him at home following a period of ill health.

Roger received a letter and two signed photos from Manchester City

At the start, support workers visited three times a day, helping Roger gradually regain everyday skills. Small but steady steps – including supported walks – helped him build up strength, while regular encouragement gave him the confidence to keep going.

Knowing how much attending a match meant to him, the team even contacted his beloved club to share his story. The response struck a chord.

Roger received a letter along with two signed photos from Manchester City – a gesture that gave him an extra lift as he worked towards his goal. Now, after weeks of progress, he no longer needs ongoing care.

Roger said: “The team who have helped me have been amazing, each and every person played a big part in making me feel confident and happy again!”

Joe Kelly said: “Thank you to Reablement team for going the extra mile for Roger, this truly is the high-quality tailored care that we strive to provide in Tameside.

“A huge well done to Roger too. With his determination and positive mindset, he worked together with his support worker to truly live well and achieve his goal. I’m pleased to hear that he doesn’t need any further support to do the things he enjoys.”

Reablement support is typically offered for up to six weeks, helping people regain independence at home after illness or a hospital stay – with the aim of getting them back to doing the things that matter most.

For Roger, that means one thing – getting back to watching City in person when they face Aston Villa on May 24, and hopefully ending the season on a high.
