Mossley charity reps share powerful stories from global summit

TWO representatives from Emmaus Mossley have returned to Tameside after joining hundreds of people from across the world at an international assembly focused on tackling poverty and homelessness.

Gary, who is supported by the Mossley-based charity, and staff member Rebecca travelled to Someren in the Netherlands for the Emmaus World Assembly.

It’s a major event bringing together representatives from more than 400 Emmaus organisations worldwide. Held every four years, the assembly saw attendees share experiences, discuss global inequality and agree collective action for the future of the movement.

For Gary, it was his second time attending the international gathering after previously travelling to Uruguay for the last assembly.

Reflecting on the experience, he said: “Following on from my visit to the last Emmaus World Assembly in Uruguay, this Assembly in the Netherlands lived up to all my expectations.

“It was amazing to hear about the wide variety of work Emmaus does around the world to help people who suffer most. I was especially moved to hear from people at Emmaus communities in current war zones, such as Ukraine and Lebanon.

“My other highlights included a visit to Emmaus Domstad and being interviewed about my experience by a lady from an Emmaus group in Finland, to inspire young people whom she helps in her community.”

The event included workshops, talks, presentations and visits to Emmaus communities and charity shops across the region, with delegates discussing issues affecting vulnerable people internationally.

Emmaus Mossley supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing accommodation, support and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

The trip also proved especially significant for Rebecca, the charity’s Online Sales Co-ordinator, who was elected as a Councillor of Emmaus International during the assembly.

Speaking after returning home, she said: “The Emmaus World Assembly was really insightful and a fantastic way to connect with Emmaus members from all over the world. It was great to share stories and learn about the diversity of Emmaus groups on a global level. Some topics were sensitive, yet important to discuss, with a focus on solidarity and standing together.

“I’m very proud to have been elected as a Councillor of Emmaus International for Emmaus Europe. I hope to encourage positive change and make a real difference with my fellow board members.”

Emmaus Mossley forms part of the wider international Emmaus movement, which was founded to combat poverty, homelessness and social exclusion while helping people gain long-term independence.
