What families can enjoy in Tameside this half-term

FAMILIES across Tameside will have plenty to keep children entertained this half-term.

Everything from messy play and outdoor art to scavenger hunts and ocean-themed library events are planned across the borough.

Portland Basin Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne will once again become one of the main hubs of activity during the May and June school break, hosting a mixture of low-cost and free creative sessions for youngsters.

Throughout the holidays, children can take part in the museum’s popular Make, Do and Play sessions every Tuesday and Thursday between 11am and 3pm, with activities including tulip-making, puppets, artwork and illustration workshops.

A range of free and low-cost activities will be available for Tameside residents during the half-term break

Local artist Caroline Coates will also lead special draw-along sessions. The activities cost £1.40 per child.

For families who don’t mind getting messy, Friday, May 29, will see the museum host a free outdoor play session featuring mud painting, bubble-making, colourful chalk and nature mandalas.

A day later, children can create artwork using natural materials such as shells and leaves during free Outdoor Arts sessions running from 10am until midday.

Another free event takes place on Friday, June 5, when youngsters will be able to build miniature cork boats before testing them out in a water tray on the museum wharf.

Meanwhile, Tameside’s libraries will be running an ocean-themed programme of activities, including crafts, games and themed sessions throughout half-term.

The popular ‘Look for a Book’ scavenger hunt is also making a return. Families will be challenged to find hidden copies of Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae, with clues posted daily on the Tameside Libraries Facebook page.

One lucky participant could even get the chance to meet the singer-songwriter herself.

Julian Jackson, Tameside Council’s Strategic Director of Housing, Environment and Estates, said: “We want as many residents as possible to make the most of the fantastic half-term offer. There are lots of free and low-cost activities available so everyone can get involved. Make sure you come along and join in the fun.”
