Ian Cheeseman says the Drama Dept’s upcoming production of Dear Evan Hansen at Stockport Plaza promises powerful performances, stunning music and a heartfelt message — all while supporting an important new mental‑health charity.
This is a show not to be missed! There are several reasons I urge you to go and support this production at Stockport Plaza next month.
Firstly, it’s a modern, emotional show that tells the story of a young man who struggles to fit in at school, something we’ve probably all had experience of either directly or through someone we know. Quite by accident, a series of events lead to him being accepted, but for complicated reasons. On paper it might sound a complex plot but trust me it isn’t.
Secondly, the musical soundtrack is written by Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, who’ve also written the songs for The Greatest Showman and La La Land, to name just two. Their pedigree is unquestionable and the songs in Dear Evan Hansen are among they best they’ve ever written.
Thirdly, the Drama Dept, one of the best Am/Dram groups, I’ve ever come across, are the performers. I went to a recent rehearsal and was lucky enough to witness a performance of one of the stand out songs from the show, You Will be Found. It was done brilliantly, with such feeling and exquisite vocal harmonies.
Fourthly, it’ll be performed in the magnificent Plaza Theatre at Stockport, one of the best venues in the North West of England, where every seat is excellent and the staff are as courteous as you’ll find anywhere.
Fifthly, they’re raising money to support a newly formed charity called Bin Silence Foundation, which was created to raise awareness and vital funds for Mental Health Charities. They’re turning everyday Wheelie Bins into bold reminders that YOU matter and that you are SEEN and NOT ALONE; one of the key messages of Dear Evan Hansen.
If those five reasons are not convincing enough, here are a few words from Dean Choudhri, who plays Evan Hansen, “I’ve been a fan of Dear Evan Hansen for quite a few years now. I saw it in the West End a few years ago and was completely blown away. It’s a dream role for me. I can relate to the themes of the show and everything Evan goes through, it’s something everyone has felt at some point. Isolation is a big theme of the story.
“The whole score is amazing. I really enjoy the song Good for You which is in Act2. Words Fail is such an amazing song that has so much to it. It’s a privilege to perform it. The story of Evan is really emotional throughout so trying to find the moments of levity and romance are a challenge too. I’ve done a few shows before but never in a big lead role. This one really matters to me and I know how much people love it. I can’t wait for show week.”
Personally, Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favourite shows too and I know the Drama Dept will do it justice, so I urge you to support it if you can. Tickets are £20 with £2 going to the Bin Silence Foundation
Dear Evan Hansen is running at Stockport Plaza from 3–6 June. Book your tickets via https://forms.gfe/HZbNrB8joc7AtLtK7 and You Will be Found!
