Andy Burnham visits Dane Bank Primary School

GREATER Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has paid a visit to Dane Bank Primary School to see the work they have been doing in their community.

Children at the Thornley Lane South school welcomed the mayor and proudly showed him a range of projects they have been leading to make a difference both locally and beyond.

Among the initiatives were bug hotels created to boost biodiversity and support the development of Dane Bank green space, as well as a current project building bird feeders to encourage more wildlife to thrive in the area.

Pupils also spoke about their pre-loved school uniform sales, helping families save money while promoting recycling and reducing landfill waste.

Their fundraising efforts for the Poppy Appeal were also highlighted, supporting Help for Heroes and people who have served in the armed forces.

Another project saw children from Spey House visiting at Christmas to sing for residents, helping spread festive cheer to elderly members of the community.

Members of the School Council were also given the chance to put their own questions to Mr Burnham, asking everything from what inspired him to become mayor to how he makes decisions and what life was like working in Parliament as a former MP.

They also asked what job he wanted when he was younger, what he did before becoming mayor, how difficult the role can be and what he enjoys most about the job.

Headteacher Joanne Lennon said the visit had left a real impression on pupils.

She said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Andy to school. The children enjoyed meeting him and learning more about the job of being Mayor of Greater Manchester. It was also lovely to see the Year 6 children inspired when talking to Andy about their future career plans.”
