Primary school places boost for Tameside families

THOUSANDS of children across Tameside have secured places at their preferred primary schools.

Council figures show another strong year for admissions across the borough.

New data reveals more than 95 per cent of children due to start Reception in September 2026 have been offered their first-choice school – marking the second consecutive year the figure has reached that level. It also sits comfortably above the 10-year average of 92.5 per cent.

Around 98 per cent have received either their first or second preference, meaning only a small proportion were allocated a place further down their list.

In total, 2,548 Reception places have been assigned across Tameside’s mainstream primary schools ahead of the new academic year.

Parents were able to name up to six preferred schools when applications closed in November last year, with offers now confirmed months in advance of September’s intake.

Emlyn Wright, Assistant Director for Education & Inclusion at Tameside Council, said the figures reflect ongoing efforts to meet demand across the area.

“We know how important it is for families to secure a place at their preferred primary school, so it is very encouraging to see such high levels of first-choice offers once again this year.

“These results demonstrate the continued work taking place across Tameside to ensure we have sufficient school places available and that families are supported throughout the admissions process.”

Families have now been notified of their allocated schools, giving them several months to prepare ahead of their children starting Reception in the autumn.
