New home-to-school transport service aims to support families across Tameside and beyond

A developing transport initiative is aiming to provide safer and more supportive journeys for children and young people across the region.

First Steps Together has announced plans to expand its Home to School Transport service, focusing on delivering reliable travel for families, schools and local authorities.

The group, which operates across specialist education, care homes and transport services in the North West, says its mission is centred on helping young people “grow, thrive and fulfil their potential.”

It is currently in discussions with local authority transport teams to explore how it can work in partnership across Manchester, Tameside and Derbyshire.

The transport service has been developed in response to concerns that traditional school transport does not always meet the needs of children, particularly those with additional needs. Instead of long or isolating journeys, the organisation says its minibuses are designed to provide calm, structured and consistent experiences that support wellbeing.

Each vehicle includes a trained Passenger Assistant, offering support beyond a standard escort role, with a focus on creating safe, predictable and positive journeys for every young person.

Alongside transport, First Steps Together is also expanding its wider provision, including specialist schools offering personalised education and new care homes designed to provide stable, therapeutic environments.

Organisers say their approach is built on care, consistency and communication, with the aim of ensuring every journey, whether in education, care or transport, supports young people to feel understood and supported.

Parents, schools and local authorities interested in finding out more or working with the service are being encouraged to get in touch.
