Tameside readers invited to get creative with quizzes and writing competitions

BOOK lovers across Tameside are being encouraged to pick up a page-turner or put pen to paper as a fresh wave of activities marks the National Year of Reading.

Local libraries are hosting a mix of events aimed at all ages, from a competitive literature quiz to a creative writing challenge for budding young authors.

One of the highlights is the World Book Night big book quiz, set to take place at Ashton Library on Thursday, April 23, from 6pm to 7.30pm. Open to both teams and individuals, the free event promises a test of literary knowledge – with a few prizes up for grabs for those who come out on top.

Libraries across Tameside have lots more planned to embrace the National Year of Reading

Meanwhile, younger residents are being invited to unleash their imaginations as part of National Share-a-Story Month. A short story writing competition is now open, challenging entrants to create their own fairy tale based on the theme ‘Once Upon a Story’.

From wizards and fairies to goblins and magical worlds, the competition welcomes a wide range of fantasy ideas. There are three age categories, with a 500-word limit, and a deadline of Friday, May 1.

Winners in each category won’t just take home bragging rights, as their stories will also be published as both an e-book and audiobook on BorrowBox, making them available to library members across Greater Manchester.

The activities form part of the wider 2026 National Year of Reading, which aims to inspire more people to discover a love of books. This year’s theme, ‘Go All In’, encourages readers to explore whatever interests them most.

Julian Jackson, Tameside Council’s Strategic Director of Housing, Environment & Estates, said: “It’s wonderful to see our National Year of Reading celebrations continuing with even more fun activities designed to encourage creativity and reading for pleasure.

“Whether you’re testing your knowledge in the book quiz or creating your own fairy tale for the short story competition, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I encourage everyone across Tameside to get involved, have fun, and discover the joy that reading can bring.”

Entries for the writing competition are open now here, while the quiz offers a simple option to turn up and take part for those looking for a more social evening.
