Tameside election candidates hope to turn borough Green

TAMESIDE’S Green Party has declared it wants to turn the borough into a new colour after announcing its candidates for the local elections.

The group is on a high after Hannah Spencer became Denton’s new MP in the recent Gorton and Denton by-election.

Now it has revealed its list of people who will look to win in the vote on Thursday, May 7.

The Greens will field candidates in every ward bar St Peter’s after more than doubling its membership numbers since the summer.

Lee Huntbach, Tameside’s first ever Green councillor who served in Ashton Waterloo from 2019 to 2023, is standing again.

Glenn Piper, a retired teacher and community champion who dedicates his time to litter picking and reporting fly tipping will stand in Audenshaw.

Jackie Olden, a gambling reform campaigner who has handed in a 43,000-strong petition to Downing Street is up for election in Denton South.

And Phil Wilson-Marks, a teacher in Manchester who helped to launch the Tameside LGBT Forum and previously served as a trustee and later chair of Salford Pride will be on the ballot paper in Stalybridge North.

Recently the party has been supporting residents’ fight to save the football pitch at Denton’s St Thomas More RC College, with the new MP assisting the campaign.

It has also raised concerns about the proposed development at the former site of Two Trees High School, with the parliamentarian highlighting the ‘serious and legitimate concerns regarding the capacity of local infrastructure’ and traffic congestion on Two Trees Lane.

She committed to subject the proposal to rigorous scrutiny and challenge Tameside Council, so residents’ voices meaningfully shape decisions.

And Mr Wilson-Marks, elections officer for Tameside Green Party, said: “Following the Green Party’s victory over Labour and Reform in the Gorton and Denton by-election — electing Tameside’s first Green MP — these local elections present residents with a positive and hopeful alternative.

“In Tameside, it doesn’t have to be the same party elected time and again, nor a shift towards the far-right.

“The Green Party stands as the only credible choice, offering a clear vision for a greener, fairer Tameside”
