Development plans for Mossley pub

A MOSSLEY pub, which has been closed for several months, will see apartments placed in its upper floors if planning permission is granted.

The Correspondent understands the name of The Britannia Inn, on Manchester Road, may also change down the line.

Droylsden-based Stephen Bower, of Bower Property Developments, has applied to Tameside Council to transform the levels above the bar into five separate properties.

It would see a dormer loft conversion to the rear, but the existing ground floor is to remain as a public house.

Mainly studio accommodation, the loft would house a one-bedroomed property for two people if permission is granted.

The fate of the Britannia Inn has been the subject of debate for some time after it was shuttered.

However, new owners are said to have been found, with plans to keep the pub but change its focus towards food.

In September 2025, Admiral Taverns opened the doors to anyone looking to run The Britannia Inn after spending £300,000 to refurbish it.

It invested in a fully refreshed bar area, modernised dining spaces, upgraded kitchen facilities and a new beer terrace.

And the firm saw the forthcoming work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade, which will see Mossley’s railway station moved, as a great selling point.

“This is an incredibly rare and exciting opportunity,” said Anthony Briggs, business development manager at Admiral Taverns.

“The combination of a £300,000 investment, the station relocation right to the pub’s doorstep, and its place on the Real Ale Trail makes this a dream business for the right licensee.”

Tameside Council’s Speaker’s Panel (Planning) committee, or officers, will decide whether to grant or refuse permission.
