CHILDREN at St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Audenshaw have spoken out about dangerous driving outside their school gates during a visit from MP Angela Rayner.
Members of the school council invited the MP to hear their concerns first-hand, describing how speeding traffic and risky behaviour at nearby lights are putting people at risk.
Ahead of the visit, pupils wrote to their local representative outlining a series of incidents, including reports of drivers attempting to beat traffic lights and even mounting the kerb.

They said staff, parents and residents had been injured, while road rage and aggressive driving have become a regular occurrence.
During her visit to the Audenshaw Road school, Ms Rayner listened as pupils shared their experiences and ideas for improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
“It was fantastic to visit St Stephen’s and spend time with such brilliant pupils and dedicated staff,” said the MP, whose Ashton-under-Lyne constituency includes Audenshaw.
“I know how important it is for parents to feel confident that their children are safe getting to and from school, so it was really valuable to hear first-hand about the road safety concerns in the area.

“I’m committed to working with the school and local partners to look at what more can be done to improve safety outside the gates.”
As well as discussing road safety, the visit marked the official opening of “The Nest”, the school’s new outdoor learning space designed to support pupils’ wellbeing and provide opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.
MP Rayner added: “It was a real privilege to officially open The Nest. Spaces like this make such a difference – giving children the chance to learn in a different environment, build confidence and enjoy their surroundings. It’s a wonderful addition to the school and I look forward to seeing the children enjoy it for years to come.”
Headteacher Guy Lovgreen commented: “We were delighted to welcome Angela to St Stephen’s. The opening of The Nest is a very special moment for our school, and it was great for our pupils to share their ideas and experiences directly. We’re grateful for her support on the important issue of road safety.”
