Curzon Ashton appoint new chairman

CURZON Ashton Football Club has confirmed that Jim Newall has been appointed as its new chairman.

It came a week after John Clayton stepped down from the role, after a 14-year involvement with the club, due to personal circumstances.

Following that news, Mr Newall – who was previously vice-chairman – became interim chairman and has now assumed the position on a permanent basis at the National League North outfit.

In a statement on Monday (March 16), the Nash said “we wish him every success in the role going forward”.

Mr Newall has been involved with the Ashton-under-Lyne based club since 2001, initially joining as part of then-manager Gary Lowe’s backroom staff.

He was elected onto the board in 2005 and became vice-chairman in 2019 alongside chairman Wayne Salkeld, following the departure of Harry Twamley.

Curzon sit 16th in the National League North – the sixth tier of English football – following a 5-1 defeat at Spennymoor Town on Tuesday night (March 17).

The Nash make the long trip to Norfolk on Saturday (March 21) for their next outing, against a King’s Lynn Town side who sit one place and one point below them in the table.
