Mountain biker rescued after woodland crash

A MOUNTAIN biker was rescued after suffering a suspected back injury during a crash in woodland in Tameside.

Saddleworth-based Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT) were called to help the emergency response near Park Bridge on Saturday (March 7).

The team were summoned at 4.30pm to assist the North West Ambulance Service, following reports that a rider had come off their bike deep within the woodland area, on the border between Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham.

Paramedics were first on the scene and assessed the casualty before OMRT volunteers took over the technical rescue.

Because of concerns about a potential back injury, team members used a specialist vacuum mattress to fully immobilise the rider. The casualty was then placed inside a winter casualty bag to protect them from the cold and secured onto a stretcher.

From there, rescuers carefully carried the injured biker through the woodland to a waiting ambulance for further treatment.

An OMRT spokesperson said: “We wish the casualty a speedy recovery and hope they’re back out enjoying the trails soon.”

In total, 16 team members were involved in the rescue, which lasted around two hours.
