Green Party’s historic win in Gorton and Denton sees eight parties lose deposits

The Green Party of England and Wales has won the Gorton and Denton by-election.

The result marks a significant shift in Greater Manchester politics with eight parties losing their £500 deposits.

The vote took place on February 26 following the resignation of former MP Andrew Gwynne on health grounds. The seat had long been held by the Labour Party.

Members of The Conservative Party

Green candidate Hannah Spencer secured 14,980 votes. That equates to 40.7 per cent of ballots cast. She won by a majority of 4,402. It is the party’s first parliamentary by-election victory. It is also its first seat in northern England.

Reform UK candidate Matt Goodwin finished second. He received 10,578 votes, or 28.7 per cent. Labour’s Angeliki Stogia came third with 9,364 votes, or 25.4 per cent.

Candidates must secure at least 5 per cent of the vote to keep their deposit. Eight failed to reach that mark.

They included:

  • Conservative Party candidate Charlotte Ann Cadden, 706 votes, 1.9 per cent
  • Liberal Democrats candidate Jackie Pearcey, 653 votes, 1.8 per cent
