A CANDIDATE in the Gorton and Denton by-election has told of her aim to see the town’s derided railway station brought into full use.
Jackie Pearcey has also criticised the way the Tameside town is being almost overlooked in favour of national backbiting.
The February 26 poll promises to be keenly fought as 11 candidates will stand.

Much of the attention has been dedicated to the battle between Reform UK’s Matt Goodwin and the Green Party’s Hannah Spence and as the former put it ‘the referendum on Keir Starmer.’
But the Liberal Democrats’ representative is not losing sight of what is happening on her doorstep.
Jackie Pearcey told The Correspondent: “I find it very disturbing that people are only seeing the election in national terms, when what Denton needs most is an MP who actually cares about the area.
“Denton, like Gorton, needs investment in the existing housing stock, needs more jobs and needs investment.
“I live here, about 20 feet away from the Gorton/Denton border.
“This is my community and I want it to thrive.”
Talk of bringing Denton’s railway station into full use, with a tram-train system to Stockport most likely, has been on the agenda for months after being brought up by the Greter Manchester Combined Authority.
And if the Liberal Democrats win, expect those ambitions to feature high on the political agenda.
Jackie Pearcey added: “I would be very much present and active as an MP.
“Both Gorton and Denton have suffered in recent months by having difficulties accessing their Member of Parliament.
“I fully support plans to bring Denton Station back into full use, either as train or train-trams.
“This would improve links in the area and help to attract jobs.”
Jackie Pearcey is one of 11 candidates standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
