Denton woman fined after ignoring council order to turn down loud music

A DENTON woman has been fined after repeatedly breaching a council order to stop playing loud music at her home, despite complaints from neighbours and formal warnings.

Tameside Magistrates’ Court heard how residents living near a property on Moorfield Avenue raised concerns with Tameside Council about persistent loud music coming from the address.

In response, an Environmental Health officer installed noise monitoring equipment at a nearby property.

After analysing the recordings, the council served a noise abatement notice on the then occupier, Donna Keelan, requiring the disturbance to stop.

The court was told that the music continued regardless. Council officers witnessed breaches of the abatement notice on three separate occasions within a single week in April 2025.

Ms Keelan appeared before magistrates on December 19, 2025, where she pleaded guilty to the offences. She was fined £120, ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge and a further £50 in prosecution costs.

Following the hearing, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods, Cllr Laura Boyle, said: “Prosecution is a last resort in cases such as this, but where someone ignores a noise abatement notice we will take further action.

“This is good work by our public protection team and reflects our commitment to using our regulatory powers to support and protect residents who are negatively impacted by the actions of others.”

Noise abatement notices are used by councils to tackle ongoing disturbances that affect residents’ quality of life. Breaching such a notice is a criminal offence and can result in fines and further enforcement action.
