Tameside volunteers come together to support families through winter food drive

Volunteers from BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Ashton-under-Lyne have been lending a helping hand to families across Tameside this winter, supporting local food banks as part of an annual Community Food Drive.

With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to put pressure on household budgets, demand for food support remains high across the borough. In response, local volunteers came together in a spirit of compassion and community service to collect and distribute essential food items for people most in need.

Throughout November and December, volunteers worked closely with food banks and community organisations in Tameside to donate non-perishable items such as cereals, pasta, lentils, tinned foods and long-life milk. Donations were carefully organised to ensure they met local needs and could be distributed safely and efficiently.

In Ashton-under-Lyne, volunteers partnered with the Trussell Trust to help support individuals and families experiencing hardship during the winter months. The collaboration reflects a growing effort to strengthen ties between faith groups and community organisations across Tameside.

Mayur Patel, a volunteer from Ashton-under-Lyne, said:

“When we deliver these donations, we’re not just giving food – we’re sharing hope. It’s about letting people know they’re not alone and that their community cares.”

Local food bank representatives thanked volunteers for their continued support, highlighting how vital community-led initiatives are at one of the busiest and most challenging times of the year.
