Portland Basin Museum is rolling out a programme of free and bespoke festive events for all ages in the run-up to Christmas.
Residents can look forward to seasonal craft sessions, a makers’ market, and brass band performances with a festive twist.
On Saturday, December 6, from 11am to 3pm, families can take part in a day of free children’s craft activities, including making elf hats and mini elf decorations.

Little Owl Artisan will host a Christmas craft market on Sunday, December 7, from 10.30am to 3pm, offering a wide range of handmade gifts and treats. St John’s Band Droylsden will also perform festive brass music from 12.30pm to 2pm.
The Tameside Council-run museum features a gift shop packed with retro and heritage-inspired gifts ideal for stocking fillers and Christmas presents. A brand-new collection of confectionery—based on the old-fashioned grocery store in the museum’s 1920s street—is now available and perfect for food hampers.
On Sunday, November 30, the museum will also take part in Museum Shop Sunday, an international event celebrating cultural retail and encouraging visitors to shop with purpose and support arts and heritage attractions. The museum shop is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.
Tameside Council Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Cllr Feeley, said: “We are delighted to be hosting free festive activities for residents this winter. Portland Basin is a wonderful space, and we encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the celebrations, and support our local businesses.”
