Tameside strengthens support for people sleeping rough during severe weather

TAMESIDE Council’s Rough Sleeping Team continues to work across the borough throughout the winter months, alongside partner organisations, to locate and support anyone sleeping rough.

Whenever temperatures drop to dangerous levels, the council activates its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP). This emergency response provides safe, short-term accommodation for anyone sleeping rough during periods of extreme weather, helping to protect lives and ensure no one is left exposed to the cold.

Councillor Andrew McLaren, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness, said:

“No one should have to sleep outside in any circumstance, but freezing weather is particularly dangerous. Activating SWEP is about saving lives and showing compassion. Our outreach teams and partners are out across the borough helping people into emergency accommodation, and we urge residents to report anyone they are concerned about so we can act quickly.”
