Tameside Council looks to build new affordable housing

NEW AFFORDABLE housing is set to be approved for Tameside.

Council-owned land is likely to be unlocked under a plan to build up to 485 properties for the borough’s families, first-time buyers and older residents.

Assessment backed up the belief that more affordable and social housing is urgently needed across Tameside.

Executive Cabinet

Now this new plan, set to go before the authority’s executive cabinet on Wednesday, November 26, will try and tackle that issue.

If approved, it will use council-owned land that is no longer needed for other purposes and work with trusted housing providers to build homes quickly.

It will also make sure homes match local needs – including family homes, apartments, and supported housing.

Should it get the go ahead, council officers will begin detailed engagement with registered housing provider partners and legal reviews immediately, with site disposals expected to commence in early 2026.

And if successful, more sites could be identified to bring more homes.

Councillor Andrew McLaren, Tameside Council’s deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, said: This is about being ambitious and taking control of our housing future.

“By using our own land and working in partnership, we can deliver more than just the required percentage of affordable and social homes local people need and reduce homelessness across Tameside.”
